Interesting stories about classical music.
Ever heard of the Swedish Mozart? Or who wrote the first film music? Or what is behind Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro?
Questions upon questions that are discussed in entertaining podcast episodes. Here I would like to list three podcasts that I particularly enjoyed. The links are listed below.
Klassik drastisch by Deutschlandfunk Kultur in German
With "Lippenbekenntnisse zweier Nerds", the two actors David Striesow and Axel Ranisch tell entertaining stories (approx. 7 minutes per episode) about selected pieces of classical music. The narration is not classical at all, but more like two nerds talking about the latest apps. Very entertaining.
Masterpieces of classical music from WDR in German
Things are a little more serious at WDR. But here, too, there is a wealth of short and informative stories about operas, symphonies and composers. Various music journalists have their say here in approx. 13 minutes.
Aria Code by WQXR/WNYCStudios in English Language
A friend of mine brought Aria Code to my attention. As the title suggests, it takes a close look at an aria and puts it in context today. The presenter Rhiannon Giddens interviews guests and the singers of the aria. Very nice: at the end you can hear the complete aria.
BR-Klassik: Beethoven the biography to listen to with Udo Wachtveitl.
And here is also a "reader" tip. Udo Wachtveitl tells about the life of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven. 250 years ago, Europe is in a period of upheaval. Beethoven composes his music during this time. If you have time (and if the regulations allow it again), I can only recommend the Beethoven exhibition in Bonn. Here, too, life and work are wonderfully presented in the context of the events.
